The mantle is the anlage of the sebaceous gland. Mature sebocytes develop from mantle epithelium and, in time, form sebaceous glands.
 

Critique

 
Pinkus came to realize that the mantle was the normal progenitor of sebaceous glands and not a malformed follicle.
