Biologic Behavior

Melanoma in prepubescent children grows rapidly and that is why it often has penetrated the subcutaneous fat by the time a biopsy specimen has been obtained of it. Every melanoma in the 11 prepubescent children in our series was very thick. Metastasis of melanoma occurred in all 11 of these children, as a "satellite" in the skin in one child and to regional lymph nodes in the other 10 children. At the time of this writing, all of the children, save the one Japanese child, are alive, the period of follow-up being from two to 37 months (Table 4). The prognosis for each of them is grave.
