The editorial in the Archives of Dermatology by Friedman, Rigel, Kopf, and Polsky titled, "ABCDE—an Evolving Concept in the Early Detection of Melanoma," [1] sets forth the history of the "ABCDs" (with the addition of "E") from the vantage of those co-workers. Mine is a different reading of that history and I share it now in the spirit of academic exchange for the purpose of accuracy.* What follow are facts.
