About Derm101.com
Derm101 debuted in February 2002 at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology. From its inception, Derm101 has aspired to be the premier online resource in academic dermatology worldwide and, today, that aspiration is a reality.
Derm101 is proud to have the following institutional partners: the Ackerman Academy (New York City, USA) and the Dermatologikum (Hamburg, Germany). Resources that were developed for Derm101 in its early years such as the Interactive Quizzes and the online version of the journal Dermatopathology: Practical & Conceptual continue to thrive under the leadership of our Contributing Editors.
The vision for Derm101 had its origins in an offer made in 1999 by Bernard Ackerman to his nephew, Andy Zwick, to join him at the Ackerman Academy to oversee the business aspects of his professional life with specific attention to efforts in publishing in dermatology. Having done a thesis on the history of medical publishing, Andy saw parallels in the opportunities that the development of infrastructure in the 19th century and the way the Internet could transform communications in medicine during the 21st century. In 2000, when he began managing Dr. Ackerman's professional life, Andy's primary focus was planning and overseeing the transition from print media in dermatology to what today is Derm101.
Betsy Stevens brought to Derm101 a strong background in publishing. Both she and Zenaida Vega had worked tirelessly on the print editions of works that are presently featured on Derm101 such as A Clinical Atlas of 101 Common Skin Diseases and the journal, Dermatopathology: Practical & Conceptual. Today, Betsy and Zenaida work in concert with Silverchair Science + Communications, our partner in the development of Derm101 from content management to the technical integration that makes the site function seamlessly.
Derm101 welcomes you to a new era in its history: the release of Derm101 2.0.
